The author grew up during World War Two, in a dysfunctional home without a father. He fostered bitterness and hatred towards the Germans and the Dutchmen who had joined them. Although he had a strong Christian background, it was years before he experienced Christ's peace and forgiveness. He became close friends with a man whose father was pro Nazi - a friend of the enemy - and the two men develop a ministry of reconciliation among war-traumatised Europeans.
